How to get a large slab onto a wall.
The wall comes first. Get the substrate flat to 1/8 inch in 10 feet, then plan how the panel gets vertical and stays there. A 10 ft 6 in slab is a geometry problem before it is a weight problem, and the standard for gauged porcelain panels calls for two installers as a minimum.

Start with the wall.
The panel is only as good as what it lands on. Check the substrate before the slab leaves the shop.
Gauged porcelain panels are thin and rigid. They do not bend to follow a wavy wall. Set one over a high spot and you get a void beside it, and a void under a large panel is where the crack starts.
ANSI A108.19, the American standard for gauged porcelain tile panels, asks for a substrate flat to 1/8 inch in 10 feet and 1/16 inch in 2 feet. That is tighter than most framed walls come out. Run a straightedge over it, mark the highs and the lows, and fix them with a patch or a leveling coat before install day.
Natural stone is easier on flatness and harder on weight. Either way the wall is the part you can still fix cheaply. The slab is not.
The flatness numbers and the two-installer rule below come from ANSI A108.19, read through a setting-materials maker’s published installation guide rather than the standard text. Buy the standard if you are writing a spec off it.
Two installers is the floor.
The standard sets a minimum of two. That is the floor for handling the panel, not the crew the job wants.

Length beats weight.
A 10 ft 6 in slab is a geometry problem. The weight is the easy part.
A 3200 mm porcelain slab is 10 feet 6 inches long. A 3240 mm panel is 10 feet 8 inches. A house stair has roughly 6 feet 8 inches of headroom and a landing three to four feet deep. You cannot pivot a rigid ten-foot panel through that. No amount of crew fixes it, because it is not a strength problem.
The makers say the same thing in their own manuals. Neolith opens its handling chapter by stating that slabs must be loaded, unloaded and transported by forklift, bridge crane or another hoisting device. Laminam tells installers to move the slab keeping it always perpendicular to the ground, avoid bending, and safeguard the corners.
The failure mode is the other reason to keep it vertical and supported. Porcelain does not crack the way natural stone does. It shatters, and the pieces are sharp.
So the qualifying question on a slab wall is not what the piece weighs. It is how long it is, what floor it is going to, and whether there is a stair in the path.

Working out your own: 3 cm granite runs about 16.6 lb a square foot. Multiply your slab. Capacity drops as the arm reaches out, so send the weight and the reach together.
Rack or machine.
A suction rack and a machine do different jobs. Height decides which one you need.
A rack handles the face
Pump cups and a rack give the crew something to hold and spread the grip across the panel. On a table, on a cart, at waist height, a rack is the right tool and most shops already own one.
A rack does not hold plumb
It gives your people a grip. It does not hold a panel still and vertical at twelve feet while somebody works the bottom edge. That is the part hands cannot do for long.
A machine holds position
Four 16 in pads on two independent vacuum circuits, tilt, powered rotation and 4 in of side shift. The panel stays exactly where you put it while the crew sets it.
Height is the line
The SL609 HLE RT lifts 13 ft 11 in. If the top of your panel lands under that and the machine can park near the wall, the machine is the easier day.
Holding it plumb at height.
Vertical placement is where slab walls go wrong. Most of the fix happens before the panel leaves the cart.
- Dry-fit firstLay the courses out and mark the wall. Chalk the top of each panel and the joint lines. A panel held at height is not the moment to work out where it goes.
- Set the machine, then the pieceSupport legs down and locked, 5 ft 8 in of width. Pads on a clean, sealed, non-porous face. Polished, honed and leather all hold. Dust does not.
- Use the fine controlsTilt to bring the panel off the cart to vertical, rotate to square it up, then side shift the last few inches instead of walking the machine. Memory positions repeat the same set on the next panel.
- Stay out from under itOne person on a remote, standing to the side, is the only method that actually keeps people out of the fall shadow.
OSHA’s Safety and Health Information Bulletin on handling granite, marble and stone slabs records 46 deaths nationwide between 1984 and 2006. Its recommended controls are mechanical rather than procedural: cranes, forklift attachments, slab dollies and suction lifts. It also tells crews to stay out of the fall shadow.

The order of operations.
Seven steps in the order that keeps the slab whole.
1. Straightedge the wall
Flat to 1/8 inch in 10 feet. Patch or float the highs and lows and let them cure. Do this a day early, not on install morning.
2. Measure the route
32.7 in to drive through, so a standard 36 inch door clears. 5 ft 8 in with the legs down to work. Measure the room the piece lands in, not only the door.
3. Sort the ground
Support legs need firm, level ground. A curb or a couple of steps takes the ramp. Ask for the ramp when you book and it goes on the truck.
4. Stage the slab
Cart it in on edge, face out, where the machine can take it without a second handling. Every extra pick is another chance to chip a corner.
5. Dry-fit and mark
Chalk the courses and the joints. Set your ledger or your leveling clips. Decide where the panel lands before it is off the cart.
6. Pick, tilt, place
Seal the pads, check the gauge, tilt to vertical, walk it in, then rotate and side shift to the line. Small moves. The machine is better at small moves than people are.
7. Support while it grabs
Leave the pads on until the setting material has it. Braces and clips first, machine off second. That order is not optional.

How flat does a wall have to be for a large porcelain panel?
ANSI A108.19 asks for 1/8 inch in 10 feet and 1/16 inch in 2 feet. Straightedge the wall and fix it before install day. A large rigid panel will not follow a wavy substrate, and the void it bridges is where a crack starts.
How many installers does a large-format slab need?
Two is the minimum in the standard. In practice a 10 ft 6 in panel going up a wall wants four people, or one on a machine and two setting it.
Can we carry a 10-foot slab up a staircase?
No. A house landing is three to four feet deep with about six feet eight of headroom, and a ten-foot-six panel does not pivot through that. It is geometry, not strength. The way up is from outside, or in a hoist rated for the load.
Will the vacuum pads hold honed or leathered stone?
Yes, as long as the face is sealed and non-porous. Polished, honed and leather all hold. Four 16 in pads on two independent circuits. Send a photo if the finish is unusual and we will tell you before you book.
Will the machine fit through the door and still work in the room?
It drives through at 32.7 in, so a standard 36 inch door clears. It needs 5 ft 8 in of width with the support legs down to lift anything. Measure both. A machine that fits the door and cannot set its legs is a wasted day.
