Iron Bay Equipment

Straight answers

Do I need a licensed operator to run a glazing robot?

No. There is no license or certification card for running a Smartlift. Our driver walks your crew through the controls at drop-off, and you have our number for the whole rental. If you can drive a pallet jack, you can run a Smartlift.

It is not a crane.

That one fact is why the licensing question has a short answer.

  • No crane operator cardA vacuum lifter has no hook and no suspended load. There is no certified operator to book.
  • One person on a remoteThe operator walks beside the piece. The crew that used to carry it is free to set it.
  • Your crew, your rulesYour normal jobsite training and PPE still apply. The walkthrough sits on top of that, not instead of it.

What the walkthrough covers.

About twenty minutes at drop-off, on your site, on your piece if it is there.

  1. The remote

Drive, lift, extend, tilt, rotate, and side shift. Every function is one button and it moves in small increments.

  2. The pads and the gauge

Four 16 in pads on two independent circuits. The gauge shows the seal before anything moves, and the driver shows you what the warning means.

  3. Reach and capacity

1,320 lb close to the mast. Capacity drops as the arm goes out. We go through the load chart so nobody finds the limit on the job.

  4. Legs, slopes, and ground

Support legs down and locked before any lift. Solid, level ground. Mats on soft ground, and no lifting on a ramp.

The follow-ups.

The five questions that usually come right after this one.

How long does the walkthrough take?

About twenty minutes on the controls and the safety circuits before our driver leaves. Most crews are running it comfortably before he goes.

Can Iron Bay send an operator with the machine?

No. We rent the machine and walk your crew through it at drop-off. Your people run it, and you have our number for the whole rental.

Is there a Smartlift certification?

Not that we have found, and we have looked. There is no card to earn. The user manual comes with the machine and it is public on the manufacturer's site.

What if my crew has never run one?

That is most crews the first time. If they have run a pallet jack or a scissor lift, they will be fine. The controls are on a remote and every function is one button.

Who is responsible for the machine on site?

You are, from drop-off to pickup, and the rental agreement says so plainly. Insurance is a line on your quote and we walk you through it before you sign.

Got one on the calendar?
